The common rule of thumb is 2–3 hours of study for every credit hour per week. So a 3-credit course needs about 6–9 hours of study per week outside of class. However, this varies by course difficulty — an easy elective might need 1.5 hours per credit while a challenging STEM course might need 3–4 hours per credit.
With a typical 15-credit load, expect about 15 hours in class plus 30–45 hours of study, totaling 45–60 hours per week. This is comparable to a full-time job with overtime. If you're working part-time, you may want to take fewer credits to maintain balance.
Study time includes reading assignments, homework, lab reports, papers, group projects, exam preparation, office hours, tutoring sessions, and reviewing notes. It does not include time spent in class or lectures — that's separate from your study hours.
Evidence-based strategies include: active recall (testing yourself), spaced repetition (reviewing over multiple days), the Pomodoro technique (25-minute focused blocks), teaching concepts to others, and studying in dedicated distraction-free environments. Quality study time can reduce total hours needed.
