Minimum final exam scores needed to achieve each letter grade:
Mathematically impossible to reach your desired grade this semester.
The formula is: Needed Grade = (Desired Grade − Current Grade × (1 − Final Weight)) ÷ Final Weight. For example, if your current grade is 82%, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 30%, you need: (90 − 82 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 108.7% — which isn't possible, so you'd need to adjust your target.
If the needed score exceeds 100%, even a perfect final won't reach your target. The calculator will show the maximum grade you can achieve with a 100% on the final so you can set a realistic goal.
Check your course syllabus — the final exam weight is usually listed as a percentage of your total grade (commonly 20–40%). If your syllabus breaks grading into categories, the final exam percentage is its weight.
Yes, as long as you enter your current weighted average and the final exam's percentage of the total grade. If the final replaces your lowest test score, calculate what your grade would be without that policy first.
