Fuel economy is measured differently around the world. The United States uses miles per gallon (MPG), many countries use kilometers per liter (km/L), and Europe commonly uses liters per 100 kilometers (L/100km). Understanding these conversions is essential when comparing vehicles from different markets or when traveling internationally.
Divide 235.215 by the MPG value. For example, 30 MPG = 235.215 / 30 = 7.84 L/100km. Note that this is an inverse relationship — higher MPG means lower L/100km, since L/100km measures fuel consumed rather than distance per fuel.
In the US, a car getting 30+ MPG is considered good, while 40+ MPG is excellent. In metric terms, under 6 L/100km is good and under 4.5 L/100km is excellent. Hybrid and electric vehicles can achieve much higher efficiency.
L/100km tells you how much fuel you need for a given distance, making it easier to calculate trip fuel costs. It is inversely proportional to MPG and km/L, which measure distance per unit of fuel. Both approaches are valid — they just frame the question differently.
