Frequency measures how often a repeating event occurs per unit of time. Hertz (Hz) is the SI unit, measuring cycles per second. Higher prefixes (kHz, MHz, GHz) are used in radio, electronics, and computing. RPM (revolutions per minute) is used for motors, engines, and rotating machinery. This converter handles all common frequency units.
These are all units of frequency differing by factors of 1,000. 1 kHz = 1,000 Hz, 1 MHz = 1,000,000 Hz, and 1 GHz = 1,000,000,000 Hz. Hz measures cycles per second and is named after physicist Heinrich Hertz.
Divide the RPM value by 60. For example, 3,600 RPM = 3,600 / 60 = 60 Hz. RPM measures revolutions per minute while Hz measures cycles per second, so the conversion factor is 60.
The typical human hearing range is 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz (20 kHz). Frequencies below 20 Hz are called infrasound, and above 20 kHz are called ultrasound. Hearing sensitivity decreases with age, especially at higher frequencies.
